What to Do If Your Kids Are Nervous About Visiting Church
church in Lavon TX | a church for families
Worried your kids will be nervous at a new church? Here’s how families make their first Sunday at Bear Creek Community Church in Lavon easy, including keeping kids with you.
New places can feel big. That’s okay.
If your kids are a little nervous about trying a new church, you’re not alone, and neither are they. Walking into a room full of people you don’t know is hard at any age. We’re parents too, and we know the goal on a first visit isn’t getting everything right. It’s helping your kids feel safe and leave wanting to come back.
So here’s the good news: there’s no wrong way to do this. Pick whatever works for your family.
Option 1: Keep your kids with you
This is always a great choice. Your kids are welcome to sit with you in the service the whole time. No one will give you a look, and a little wiggling or noise won’t bother anyone. Kids are part of our church family, not an interruption to it.
Many families keep their kids with them on the first visit, then try The Den, our kids ministry, once everyone feels more at home.
Option 2: Visit The Den together first
Come about 15 minutes early and we’ll walk you and your kids over to The Den. You can see the room, meet the leaders, and let your kids look around before deciding anything. If they want to stay, great. If not, they can come right back to the service with you.
For your kids’ safety, only background-checked, trained volunteers stay in The Den during the service. If your child would feel better with a familiar face nearby, an older brother or sister (under 18) is welcome to stay with them.
Option 3: Make friends after the service
This might be the best part of a Sunday at Bear Creek. After the service, stick around and head out to the fenced courtyard. Weather permitting, we always have soccer balls and cornhole out, and kids play together while parents talk.
It’s an easy, low-pressure way for your kids to meet other kids without having to walk into a classroom. A lot of friendships start with a pass of a soccer ball. And next Sunday, when your child sees a familiar face in The Den, that first step gets a lot easier.
A few ideas that help on your first visit to Bear Creek Community Church
Talk about it ahead of time. Let your kids know what Sunday will look like: where you’re going, how long it lasts, and that they can stay with you if they want.
Arrive a little early. A calm arrival beats rushing in late. You’ll have time to find the restroom, grab a coffee, and get settled.
Bring something familiar. A favorite stuffed animal or small toy can make a new place feel safer.
Give them a job. Some kids relax when they have something to do, like helping carry the diaper bag or picking where to sit.
Celebrate afterward. Grab lunch or a treat after church. A good memory attached to the day goes a long way.
Common questions about helping your kids settle in at Bear Creek
Can my kids stay with me during the whole service?
Yes. Kids are always welcome in the service with their parents.
Do kids have to go to The Den?
No. The Den is an option, never a requirement, and you know your kids best. That said, we’d love for your kids to give it a try when they’re ready. The Den is built for them: Bible lessons, worship, and activities designed for their age, so they can learn about Jesus in a way that makes sense to them. Kids often get more out of a lesson made just for them than sitting through a message meant for adults. If your kids aren’t ready this week, that’s fine. The Den will be there whenever they are.
What happens after the service?
Most families hang out in the fenced courtyard. Kids play soccer and cornhole (weather permitting) while parents connect.
Where and when do you meet?
Bear Creek Community Church meets Sundays at 10:30 AM at Community Trails Middle School in Lavon, TX.
Is The Den safe?
Yes. Every volunteer in The Den is background-checked and trained, and only those volunteers (plus older siblings under 18) are in the room with your kids. [CONFIRM and add any check-in/check-out details, e.g., matching name tags or pickup codes.]
We can’t wait to meet your family
