What Does Bear Creek Community Church Believe About the Bible?

church in Lavon TX | non-denominational church near me

These are our answers to the questions we hear most often about Scripture. The short version: we believe the Bible is the true, authoritative, and fully reliable Word of God. It has everything to say about the life you're living right now.

What Kind of Church Is Bear Creek?

Bear Creek Community Church is a new, non-denominational Christian church serving the Lavon, TX area and the broader Community ISD corridor of Collin County. We’re led by Pastor David Watson and church planter Bart Blair, and we gather in homes, neighborhoods, and local spaces — building real community before we ever build a building.

We hold house church gatherings twice a month on Sunday mornings at 10:30am. Children are welcome. Coffee is guaranteed. The teaching is rooted in Scripture, the atmosphere is casual, and you won’t be pressured into anything.

Does Bear Creek Community Church believe the Bible is true?

Yes. Bear Creek Community Church believes the Bible is completely true. We hold that the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments are the written Word of God, inspired by God, authoritative in all matters of faith and life, and without error in the original manuscripts.

This isn't a cultural default for us. It's a deeply held conviction rooted in what the Bible says about itself and confirmed by centuries of faithful Christians who staked their lives on its reliability.

Is the Bible the final authority at Bear Creek, or does the pastor or church tradition have authority?

The Bible alone is the final authority at Bear Creek Community Church. We do not place church traditions, creeds, or the personal teachings of any leader above Scripture. Our pastors teach from the Bible, but the Bible itself is what we all submit to, not the pastor.

This means that if something we teach doesn't hold up to what Scripture actually says, Scripture wins. We encourage every person in our church to read and know the Bible for themselves rather than simply taking our word for it.

Does Bear Creek believe the whole Bible, both the Old and New Testaments?

Yes. Bear Creek Community Church affirms the full sixty-six books of the Bible, the entire Old Testament and the entire New Testament, as God's written Word. We do not add to or subtract from Scripture, and we do not treat any part of the Bible as less authoritative than another.

The Old Testament lays the foundation: the story of creation, humanity's fall, God's covenant, and the anticipation of a Savior. The New Testament fulfills that story in Jesus. Both Testaments together tell one coherent story of God's redemption of the world.

Does Bear Creek believe the Bible has errors?

No. Bear Creek Community Church believes the Bible is inerrant, meaning without error, in the original manuscripts. God inspired and superintended every word of Scripture, which means what was written is His Word and is therefore true and trustworthy.

We hold this conviction not out of rigidity, but because truth matters and because we believe God is fully capable of giving us His Word accurately. When apparent tensions arise between Scripture and other claims, we take that as an invitation to look more carefully at the text, at the context, and at whatever we think we know.

How does Bear Creek interpret the Bible, literally or figuratively?

Bear Creek Community Church interprets the Bible using grammatical, historical, and contextual principles. We seek to understand what the original author intended to communicate, in its original context, to its original audience, and then ask what that means for us today.

Some parts of the Bible are clearly historical narrative, others are poetry, prophecy, wisdom literature, or letters. We read each genre on its own terms. The goal is always to understand what God actually said, not to read our own assumptions into the text. We call this approach Christ-centered, because the whole of Scripture finds its purpose and fulfillment in Jesus.

What Bible translation does Bear Creek Community Church use?

Bear Creek Community Church primarily uses the Christian Standard Bible (CSB) for preaching and teaching. We chose the CSB because it balances fidelity to the original languages with readability in modern English, a quality its translators call "optimal equivalence."

In practical terms, the CSB reads more naturally than the ESV or NASB, while staying closer to the original Hebrew and Greek than the NIV or NLT. It's accurate enough to trust and clear enough to understand. We also recognize there are many faithful Bible translations, and we encourage people to read whichever one helps them best engage with Scripture in daily life.

Does the Holy Spirit help people understand the Bible?

Yes. Bear Creek Community Church believes the Holy Spirit illumines the minds of believers to understand and apply Scripture. Reading the Bible is not merely an intellectual exercise — God's Spirit is actively at work as people engage with His Word.

This is one reason we encourage everyone — regardless of education, background, or how long they've been a Christian — to read the Bible personally and regularly. God's Spirit can meet someone in the text in a way no sermon or commentary can fully replicate.

Is the Bible still relevant today?

Yes — fully and without reservation. Bear Creek Community Church believes the Bible contains the unchanging truth of God, expressed in ways that speak directly to the lives people are actually living. Whether someone is navigating relationships, questions of identity, grief, moral decisions, or spiritual doubt, Scripture speaks with clarity and wisdom.

We are committed to teaching the Bible in ways that connect its timeless truth to real life in Lavon, Texas and the communities around us. The Bible doesn't need to be updated — but we do need to keep learning how to apply it well.

What does Bear Creek believe about science and the Bible?

Bear Creek Community Church believes God is the Creator of all things and that the Bible accurately describes the reality of creation. We take Scripture's account of origins seriously and do not believe genuine science and the Bible are ultimately in conflict — because the God who wrote Scripture is also the God who created the universe that science explores.

Where questions arise at the intersection of faith and science, we encourage honest inquiry, intellectual humility, and confidence that all truth — wherever it is found — ultimately belongs to God.

How does Bear Creek use the Bible in sermons and church life?

At Bear Creek Community Church, the Bible is central to everything we do. Our sermons are expositional — meaning we work through books and passages of Scripture, explaining what the text says and what it means for everyday life. We don't pick a topic and then find Bible verses to support it. We start with the Bible and let it set the agenda.

We also read Scripture together in our gatherings, teach it in small groups, and encourage every person to build a regular habit of reading it personally. The Bible is not a supplement to our church life — it is the foundation of it.
